Test “How tolerant are you to uncertainty”

 14 October, 2021   News

And how to increase your mental stability.

Uncertainty is what an entrepreneur faces every day. Entrepreneurs do not have a standardized work schedule, and solving various operational tasks requires a creative approach. And, according to futurists such as Kjell Nordström, the new world of turbulence, which is devoid of habitual landmarks, is getting closer every day. Therefore, in the future, such “soft skills” as adaptability, emotional intelligence and high tolerance for uncertainty will be in demand.

This little test will help you know how ready you are for the challenges of the future. Each question should be answered using a 10-point scale, where 1 is rare and 10 is common.

  • How often do you need certainty and say “I need to know exactly”?
  • How often do you assess the situation unambiguously? For example, “This is a terrible / best idea”.
  • How often do you choose comfortable circumstances? (“This is my topic”.)
  • How often do you reject everything unusual? (“I’m not used to that”.)
  • How often do you want to finish the current case faster? (“Let’s move on to the next question”.)

If the results are more than 30 points, then you need certainty and control. Strange new things and uncertainty make you annoyed, rejected, and possibly confused. Uncertainty can be a source of anxiety. But, most likely, in some areas you are more resilient than in others. And that’s good news. But what to do with those areas that cause concern by their uncertainty?

Psychologists offer two main strategies that can be applied in response to conditions of uncertainty:

1.Self-creation of certainty, if possible.

For example, a person is faced with a difficult task. And there is an understanding of what the result should be, but there is no ready-made algorithm for the process. To take control of the situation, you can develop an assignment plan. If necessary, this plan can be adjusted, but the baseline scenarios will be maintained, which will help the person to achieve the goal.

2.Unconditional acceptance of uncertainty as a fact that cannot be influenced.

This scenario is appropriate if a person is faced with a situation that is not able to change or which cannot be influenced. In this case, it is important to be able to accept it and focus on completing tasks other than experiencing the stress caused by the state of uncertainty itself.
